What is Edelweiß? Part two

The "Cloud Flowers" are always in demand.

The ever increasing popularity of the small alpine gem resulted in its featuring center stage in folkloristic verse, music and story. Later, the motion picture industry used the themes of love, danger and tragedy in alpine settings on numerous occasions, making the Rodgers and Hammerstein song
"Edelweiss" famous in the 5 Academy Awards winning blockbuster movie of 1965: "The Sound of Music".

Some myths to clear up:

Edelweiss plants do not produce snowy white blossoms, as the lyrics to the song
"Edelweiss" suggest; like snow flakes though, not two are alike. The showy, hair covered rosettes aren't flower petals but modified leaves, silvery white in color with a tinge of green. The actual flower centers are golden yellow from pollen dust which is only a fleeting feature.

"Edelweiss"
Lyrics from the 1957 Rodgers & Hammerstein musical
"The Sound Of Music"

Edelweiss, Edelweiss,
every morning you greet me,

Small and white, clean and bright,
You look happy to meet me.

Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow,
Bloom and grow forever,

Edelweiss, Edelweiss,
bless my homeland forever.
